Choosing Interior Colors That Still Look Good in Five Years

The color you pick in the store is not the color you live with. Light, floor tone and the room next door all pull it in a direction.
Test big, test in place
Two-foot samples on more than one wall, looked at in morning and evening light. Small chips held against a bright window mislead every time.
Watch the undertones
A warm white next to a cool gray floor reads yellow. Look at samples against your flooring, cabinets and trim rather than against each other.
Sheen is a color decision too
Higher sheen deepens color and shows every wall imperfection. In older Quincy homes with plaster walls, a lower sheen is usually the kinder choice.
