Great Paint Won't Hide a Bad Surface

Patching, sanding and surface prep so the finish coat has something worth going on top of.

Drywall patch with joint compound feathered smooth on an interior wall

Overview

Drywall repair is part of painting, not a separate trade we're chasing. Most of what we fix is the ordinary damage a house collects: nail pops, hairline cracks at seams, a doorknob that went through the wall, an old patch that was never sanded flat.

Repairs get feathered wide and primed so they disappear when light rakes across the wall. That's the whole point of doing it properly.

What we commonly repair

If it shows through paint, it gets addressed before paint.

  • Small holes and nail holes
  • Hairline and settlement cracks
  • Dents and corner bead damage
  • Damaged sections cut out and replaced
  • Poor previous patches
  • General surface imperfections and texture blending

Why it matters

Paint has a way of highlighting what's underneath it, especially in a room with a big window or a hallway with a light at one end. Higher-sheen finishes make it worse.

Feathering a repair wide, sanding it flat and priming it evenly is the difference between a wall that looks new and a wall that looks patched.

Standalone repairs

We take selected drywall-only work when it fits the schedule, usually for people we've painted for or projects in the same neighborhood. For large-scale drywall installation, a dedicated drywall contractor is the better call and we'll say so.

Questions

Frequently asked

Can you match my wall texture?
Most common textures can be blended well enough that the repair disappears under paint. Heavy or unusual textures get discussed up front.
Is repair included in a painting estimate?
Normal prep-level repairs are included. Anything structural or larger than a typical patch gets called out as a separate line so you can see it.
How long before the repair can be painted?
Depends on depth and humidity. Most compound is ready to sand and prime the next day.
