Interior Painting
How Often Should You Repaint Your Home's Interior?
June 18, 2026 · 6 min read

There's no single answer, and anyone who gives you one number is guessing. How long interior paint lasts depends on the room, the traffic it sees, the sheen that was used and how well the walls were prepped the last time around.
A room-by-room rule of thumb
Most interiors look good for somewhere between five and ten years. Rooms that get used hard wear out first.
- Hallways, entryways and stairwells: 3 to 5 years
- Kitchens and bathrooms: 4 to 6 years
- Kids' bedrooms and playrooms: 4 to 6 years
- Living rooms and dining rooms: 6 to 9 years
- Guest rooms and ceilings: 8 to 12 years
Signs it's time, no calendar required
Walls tell you before the calendar does. Scuffs that won't wipe clean, chalky flat paint that burnishes when you touch it, hairline cracks opening at drywall seams, or color that has drifted from the touch-up can in the basement.
Another honest signal: you've stopped noticing the room. Fresh paint is one of the few changes that resets a space without moving a single wall.
If you can see the roller path from the last paint job when afternoon light rakes across the wall, the prep and the product both deserve a second look.
Why the last paint job matters more than the paint
A good coating over a poorly prepped wall fails early. Loose patch compound, glossy trim that was never scuffed, dust left on the baseboards, all of it shortens the life of the finish.
When we quote an interior repaint in Quincy, a fair share of the hours are prep. That is the part you never see and the part that decides how the room looks in year seven.
Planning the work
Interiors can be painted any time of year, which makes winter a practical window in the Tri-State area when exterior work slows down. Plan on clearing small items yourself; furniture gets moved to the center of the room and covered.
Questions we get
- Can I just touch up instead of repainting?
- Sometimes. Touch-ups blend well when you have the original paint, the same sheen and the wall hasn't faded. On older flat paint in a high-traffic hallway, a touch-up usually shows.
- Do ceilings need repainting as often as walls?
- Rarely. Ceilings often go eight to twelve years unless there's been a leak, smoke or a kitchen above the stove.
