Painting Kitchen Cabinets: What to Expect

February 14, 2026 · 5 min read

Freshly painted kitchen cabinets in a soft white finish with brass hardware

Cabinets are the highest-wear painted surface in a house, which is exactly why the process looks different from painting a bedroom.

Most of the job is preparation

Doors and drawer fronts come off and get labeled. Everything is cleaned, degreased, sanded and primed for adhesion before any finish coat goes on.

Plan for the kitchen being partly out of service

A typical kitchen runs several days. Boxes are painted in place while doors cure elsewhere, so the sink and appliances stay usable most of the time.

Cure time is not dry time. Cabinet finishes keep hardening for days after they feel dry, so hardware and heavy use wait.
